Info from Wikipedia

You can eat chia raw, in smoothies, throw some in oatmeal, pancakes, even cookies. I add them to my smoothie everyday. Here is a little video showing you how easy it is to incorporate chia into your diet.

As for sprouting…
The chia seeds can’t be sprouted by using the traditional jar sprouters and tray sprouters since they need to be dry sprouted. You can dry the sprouting chia by using two different methods. The terra cotta method is the most used.

In order to dry the chia seeds by this method, you have to sprinkle a layer of seeds on a plate or on a terra cotta dish. After that, you have to set the dish in a large plate of water and cover it with one more plate. Water will slowly penetrate the plate of terra cotta and the seeds will get the needs quantity of water in order to be sprouted. Wait a day and mist the chia seeds. On the third day you need to harvest the seeds. As you can see, it will take you about three days to get the chia sprouts. Info found here.

But the easiest sprouting solution: Buy a Chia Pet! Does this feel like a “full circle moment” for anyone else? (thanks Oprah.)

Um the chia seeds in the smoothie idea is awesome!! Taber puts them in his gatorade before his long runs but I like the smoothie idea. I didn't realize that had all that goodness in them! Awesome post!

Gatorade, now there is an idea. That makes perfect sense to add to your running drink for extra energy. Thanks for sharing. :)

I learn SO MUCH from your blog! I bought the chia seeds for my smoothies, but i didn't realize i should be soaking them first! I've been adding them dry right from the package. Now I know! Thanks Hil :)

meems-you can add chia plain to smoothies, it will just be a little crunchy and they might get in your teeth. Also, if you let the smoothie sit too long with un-soaked chia it will get gelatanous because the seed will soak up the water in the drink…so IDEALLY you soak, but it's not a necessity! :)

My Sister brought her Chia seeds to the beach and I had them for a couple mornings. I was surprised that I liked them. We soked them and added a little naked juice. The green one, I forget the name. And it was yummy.

I have a bag of milled chia seeds. are they as potent as the whole seeds? Does that even matter? Same with Flax. Thoughts?
Either way, I love them in my smoothies.

MIlled chia is probably fine, I’m not sure if it would have the same gelatinous effect that the seeds have once they are wet, but I don’t see why they wouldn’t…I actually think flax probably works better as a digestive aid when it’s milled, the only down side is that I find when I buy those big bags of flaxseed meal at Costco that it goes rancid pretty quickly, whereas flaxseeds stay better longer in the whole form. xo
